Sonic Team forgot it was a mediocre game that was forgiven due to be in a portable console with much lower standards. No one in sonic team knows anymore what a sonic game is about and they paid attention to the most mediocre (which doesn't mean bad) sonic game ever: sonic rush through the game by holding b+right, which was a mediocre game, but somehow it gave this wow effect again due to the boost mechanic. Shadow the hedgehog, sonic 360 bugs per frame + zoofilia, sonic and the secret shit, sonic and the black crap, and sonic 4 1 made in china edition. Sonic advance games were also mediocre but hey, they are portable games -> different standards. Also, the game's aesthetics were basically the opposite of the classic sonic games, splitting the fanbase in the classic nostalgia fags, modern it's 3D lovers and the who cares as long as it's blue fanboys.Īfter SA2, only shit came. But age showed that SA games are frustrating and mediocre, completely based in a "wow" effect that was doom to not last for very long. It was a new experience, you could see sonic for the first time in 3D, it was a long game and its graphics were top notch for the time. Sonic adventure was well received due to the time gap between sonic and knuckles and sonic adventure. ![]() There is barely anything new in sonic mania and still feels fresh, fun and it will stay like that for ages. To all those who like Sonic adventure: did you play it recently? The game has aged very badly unlike classic sonic games that, with all their minus they are still a pretty solid and engaging experience. I still hold out hope for a great 3D Sonic game in my lifetime after the talent in Sonic Team changes or another studio has a chance. I thought Sonic was a Mario-competing blockbuster, yet they aren't even confident enough to charge full price of a normal new game. There was something about Sonic games being priced lower that seemed appropriately indicative of what you were getting. I knew sales would be sufficient for them to feel they succeeded and my complaints would never be addressed. I realize it was enough to put Sonic "back on the map" or "fix Sonic", but that was the point I gave up lol. They did that, resulting in some titles like Generations -superficially the Sonic game we all wanted, but as I said earlier still botched it with bad control and physics. (Man, what a garbage way to handle your valuable IP.) It took years of this for it to badly affect sales to the extent that they finally said "ok, we're gonna make the investment now to make sure the quality gets better". The releases were bad, but Sonic is such a strong character that people kept buying them anyway. I agree the problem used to be that they rush games. All that good work and finesse is wasted because the basics were neglected. Yeah they did some great work, but it's like a Ferrari on donut tires. ![]() Generations fails in my book because it gets this one critical thing wrong. If they get that right I will suffer all sorts of extra crazy shit, like SA2. ![]() The physics are also all wrong.Ĭontrol and physics are paramount in a Sonic game. It felt very 1 to 1 control in Adventure and in Gens he has the same "driving Sonic" feel since Heroes that really put me off the series. I don't like Generations because I dislike the floaty, imprecise feel of the control stick. That doesn't change that my favorite one is Sonic 2 -conceptually, a 3D game could be better. ![]() I think 3D works better for him than 2D because in Sonic it can be a big deal to see what is coming ahead of you. It's meant to be in-your-face and pleasing in the moment, like gaming candy. To me the essence of Sonic is neither speed nor exploration, it's about an extremely high-fidelity/visually pleasing video game with easy to understand controls and rules of engagement with level design that facilitates having fun with its physics. Sure there were cutscenes and some very basic hub world tasks to get to the next level, but that's better than being forced to interrupt your Sonic time to play a collectathon to rap music or boring, bad slow gymnastics with button mashing combat. I feel the best we've had so far is Adventure 1, mainly because Sonic's gameplay worked and you were free to play through it AS SONIC with no interruptions. But even when it's done well, there's usually unwanted gameplay systems, characters, plots, and all around BS that fly in the face of what Sonic is all about. 3D Sonic has already been done to great effect.
